Welcome to the Irish Water Spaniel Thyroid Study Website.

Welcome to Phase Two of the Irish Water Spaniel Thyroid Study. We hope that this site will update you on the progress of the Study, explain our next goals and clarify how to you can participate.

Our initial goal for the Study was to provide an opportunity for you and your IWS to take part in assessing and quantifying thyroid gland function in the IWS. Until now, the “normals” derived from the larger canine population have been used, but as different breeds and groups of breeds can have different normal ranges, it’s useful to know the breed-specific normal range. Through the analysis of over 300 IWS, we’ve determined that the general normal range used for similarly sized dogs is appropriate for our IWSs. Thank you to the IWSCA Breeders’ Committee for their past vote of support for Phase One and MANY thanks to Alan Stern whose generous donations have made it all possible.

In the course of testing and analyzing, thanks to those IWS owners who also submitted their dogs’ blood for DNA typing, Dr. Lorna Kennedy of the University of Manchester, England has determined and located the haplotypes that carry the genetic marker for hypothyroidism/thyroiditis in the IWS breed. Because of Dr. Kennedy’s work, our next goal will be to provide sufficient samples to confirm her discovery of the genetic marker. To do so, we will need submittals from IWS dogs that are known to be affected with thyroiditis/hypothyroidism as well as healthy “controls.” Once the genetic marker has been verified, we will have the potential to develop a genetic test for the disease in IWSs.

Thanks are also HUGELY in order to several very generous individuals who have donated sufficient funds to continue our ability to subsidize the cost of blood sample collection and submittal! We hope that these funds will carry us through to the conclusion of the marker verification. Donations are always welcomed and appreciated to the IWSCA IWS Thyroid Study Restricted Fund.

Why is this study important?
It's important because the thyroid gland regulates metabolism of virtually all body cellular functions, such that reduced thyroid function adversely affects basically all areas of health and temperament.(Click here for a link to a chart of the clinical signs of Hypothyroidism.)
When should I have my IWS's thyroid tested for this Study?
Wait at least 45 days after any vaccinations, especially rabies.
Wait until after puberty, once your IWS has reached sexual maturity.
For dogs, wait until they're at least 10 months old.
For bitches, wait at least 12 weeks after the start of their first or any heat season.
Draw blood 4-6 hours AFTER taking any thyroid medication if your IWS is taking thyroid supplements.
How can I participate?
There are two principal ways to take part in the Study: this is a change from Phase One, as our focus has now shifted to DNA marker verification. Both options involve a visit to your vet to draw, prepare and ship blood. Remember to bring the Veterinary Instructions with you. In Phase Two, only those who submit blood for DNA analysis will be eligible for subsidies.
OPTION #1 Submit Blood, Serum and paperwork to Hemopet for a new thyroid panel/Thyroid Profile 5™ + DNA analysis
.Additional blood needs to be drawn for examination re the IWS DNA thyroid marker. Enclose Completed: Questionnaire, Test Request Form + DNA Informed Consent. Enclose: $75 $49 payment to Hemopet along with the whole blood and serum.
OPTION #2 Submit Blood, Serum and paperwork to Hemopet for a new thyroid panel/Expanded OFA Panel, DNA analysis and submittal to OFA Thyroid Registry – the BEST option for the breed!

Additional blood needs to be drawn for IWS DNA analysis and different tests done to satisfy OFA's Thyroid Registry requirements. This does the most for the breed as it not only helps us learn more about thyroid function in IWS, but it also adds information to OFA's thyroid database for the breed.

Enclose Completed: Questionnaire, Test Request Form, DNA INFORMED CONSENT + you'll need to download and complete OFA's Application for Thyroid Database Enclose: $126 $106 payment to Hemopet along with the whole blood and serum. Enclose: $15 payment to OFA.

Why is submitting blood to the OFA Thyroid Database different?
The OFA Thyroid Database test requirements are different from the more complete Hemopet Thyroid panel.
The OFA Thyroid panel analyzes only three analytes, while the Hemopet test analyzes five.
The OFA Thyroid panel is performed at Antech Labs, not at Hemopet.
OFA requires separate payment for inclusion in their database, which Hemopet will forward to them.
Helpful, NON-subsidized Paperwork Option:Submit Existing Complete Thyroid panels done on your IWS within the past 6 months.
This entails mailing photocopies of prior test results to Hemopet along with the Completed
Questionnaire,
## IWS owners living outside of the United States who want to submit samples for this Study also need to enclose an EXPLANATORY LETTER for US Customs along with all blood and/or serum samples.
Because of the four ways to participate, all the paperwork, the drawing and shipping different forms of blood, this may seem a bit confusing. The Checklist/Option Matrix outlines everything at a glance. Give yourself plenty of time. Print out the forms and do your best to complete them BEFORE you visit your vet. Note that the OFA application requires registration numbers and registered names.

You’ll notice some strike-throughs in the above options. The prices reflect a subsidy to hopefully encourage more people to participate at the reduced rate.

If you have any questions, contact Florence Blecher at browndogz@sbcglobal.net or (323) 874-0944 and she’ll do her best to help you sort things out.

Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to do this for our dogs!
